Am I the only one

This is one of the worst screwball comedies ever. The plot is absolutely insipid. Apparently William Powell (playing William Powell for the umpteenth time) got hit over the head 9 years earlier and assumed a new persona, that of a cheapskate Babbitt type character who somehow won over Myrna Loy and married her. While Loy has lost interest and become engaged to another (Herbert, an absolute moron), Loy's mother still loves Powell as her son-in-law. Now Powell is alone on a sea cruise where no one likes him but while accidentally seeming to be saving another passenger who fell overboard, he himself is saved but not before being conked on the head by a rescuer. Then Powell becomes his old self, a con man, and low and behold the guy he saved is also a con man and they agree to go back to Powell's current hometown to get Powell's own money out of the bank and for this Powell agrees to give his new partner 25% of his money. It only gets worse from there. Why couldn't he just go back to Haversham and say "I'd like to close my account?" End of movie. It would have been more merciful.

What amazes me is that the book on which the movie is based, "There Is Always Time to Die" by Octavus Roy Cohen, is not a comedy. I read the book a few months ago. The movie has the same basic premise, but the book is in no way funny. It is an excellent and intense read, with Larry Wilson struggling to remember the events of the eight years that he lost. He soon finds that in his previous life, he was wanted by the police for embezzlement. The book was written in 1937, so it was hard to find, but I am glad that I made the effort.

den_quixote, I am not being facetious, but serious. Can you give me your approximate age? I'm doing a little study on certain movies, age of posters, and their comments. Thank you.

It's fine, relax.

No kidding.
The OP also says Powell's character could just close his account and take the dough. Problem is there wasn't anything left after he received the $5k loan. He actually OWED almost $3k.
