Rosalind Russell was priceless
She should have won an Oscar for this role! Too bad 1939 was such an extraordinary year in film. So many legendary performances.

shareI totally agree with you. She made the movie for me--so funny!
shareIndeed! Roz was simply amazing. Everytime I watch it I keep waiting for her to come on screen again.
shareJust watched this for the first time. Rosalind had me in stitches every time she was on screen. Sylvia was my favorite character. I would love to see this on stage.

I loved the interplay between her and the exercise instructor, and near the end of the movie, in the elaborate ladies lounge, when her voice changed and she started fawning over Mary. It was an incredible performance
shareYou REALLY have to be as fast a listener in the exercise scene as they are talkers! Right in the middle of the instructor's 'Up, down's' listen for Sylvia to say "But Mrs. Haines never listens to any of her friends" and the instructor, without missing a beat, slide in "How does she avoid it?!"
This is what's missing in movies today: the presumption on the part of filmmakers that the audience is fast and intelligent. Without the competition of television, movie makers also had to court a sophisticated, adult audience, and now what gets made is dictated by what will bring in the average mall-rat.

Truth is a hard master, and costly to serve, but it simplifies every problem.

shareRosalind could have gone the Supporting Actress route just this one time, as Norma Shearer was the lead heroine of the film...the entire cast of THE WOMEN (which I finally watched in its entirety today via Netflix!) was nothing short of perfection! Crawford & Fontaine & Goddard were also flawless in my book but Shearer & Russell were the standouts from the get-go!
