So many great lines...

One of my favorites is when Norma Shearer (or her mother) says that "I'm going to stretch out in my bed like a swastika" or something like that. Pretty accurate image. This was made in 1939 so much of America was probably not so aware of what was going on in Europe so in that context this line was pretty amusing. Now...not so much.

Here's the exact line: It's marvelous to be able to spread out in bed like a swastika.

The line was spoken by Norma Shearer's mother...and I had to rewind the film to be sure I heard it right.

And then, in the next scene, the daughter says something like: "The best thing about divorce is that you can sleep with your mother" (..!!)

Two solid-gold zingers in less than five minutes...

"Sacred cows make the best hamburger." Mark Twain

You're taking the "sleep with your mother" line WAY out of context. What COULD Little Mary have said that you wouldn't have found inappropriately risque?

reply

Please tell me that poster wasn't trying to imply that she was talking about incest!?! What kind of mind takes a bittersweet statement such as that and twist it into darkness!?! Thank you for calling them out on that one!!

You've definitely misunderstood Little Mary's comment. Youngsters oftentimes love to have a chance to sleep with one or the other parent while they're young -- probably, more often with their mother. I've known many parents who love to snuggle with their little kids because it's comforting for both of them!

And, when parents separate or divorce, children often need extra physical love and comfort because their lives go through considerable upheaval. My parents divorced when I was only 10 and, though I didn't sleep with my Mom, I was terribly lonesome for my Dad. Any extra hugs and attention were helpful in making it through the first few years.

Little Mary, in turn,
appreciates having her
Mother all to herself for a bit, which allows her
cuddle up in bed with her
sometimes. There's
nothing unnatural about
that love and affection -- it's innocent and very sweet. This scenario is likely much more
prevalent with little
girls and their Moms than
with little boys and their Moms . . . Mary's comment is very cute and would probably also be soothing for her Mom at times. Being with her Mom, without having to 'share' her with her Dad's presence on occasion, is one of the very few possible 'perks' of the divorce . . . No matter what, Mary still misses her Daddy being there on a day-to-day basis.

Divorce is VERY HARD on kids and anything a single parent can do to help their child feel more secure and loved during those trying times is a good thing all the way around!!

My favorite is: regarding Buck Winston. . ."I bet he could crack a coconut with those knees.". "Yeah, if he could get tthem together!"
The censors didn't catch that one.

reply

You might be able to read it that way, but I think the intended joke is that since he's a cowboy, he is bow-legged.

reply

Yeah, I think that is the correct interpretation of the comment. At the very least, we're supposed to assume he frequently rides a horse and walks and sits like most guys -- with his legs spread apart. Men are threatened with fines on some public transportation for taking up more than one seat because they don't seem to understand that they're taking up too much leg space! That's rarely a problem with females . . . unless they're really trying hard to get a date!!!
