Judy Garland

Was she considered particularly attractive in her time? She's far from ugly, but she has something...different about her. Eyes a little far apart or something. I'm just wondering how she compared to other actresses from around this time. Rita Hayworth was a total knockout.

Garland was like 15 when this was filmed, you know.

I think her fame as an adult was based more on her singing and acting talent than on her looks, but she was in no way considered unattractive.

That actually isn't completely true. I think the media generally found her attractive, but unfortunately behind the scenes directors and producers thought she was ugly. Personally I think she was very pretty

She was 16.

Not sure but I think she was an attractive woman ..

reply

Yup. Very attractive IMO

I always thought she was pretty :)

In fact, for a brief time before the movie was being filmed, an early design idea they had for Dorothy was to put Judy Garland in a poofier dress with a blond wig and "dolly" makeup, but the producer wasn't happy with her look and wanted to use Judy's natural looks instead. So that's why they made her dress more low-key (she was playing a farm girl, after all) and had her go back to the brown hair and less makeup. I think it worked out just fine :)

Movie was great, and she's about as cute as she ever was in it. It would have been crazy to go the other direction.
