Was she considered particularly attractive in her time? She's far from ugly, but she has something...different about her. Eyes a little far apart or something. I'm just wondering how she compared to other actresses from around this time. Rita Hayworth was a total knockout.
That actually isn't completely true. I think the media generally found her attractive, but unfortunately behind the scenes directors and producers thought she was ugly. Personally I think she was very pretty
In fact, for a brief time before the movie was being filmed, an early design idea they had for Dorothy was to put Judy Garland in a poofier dress with a blond wig and "dolly" makeup, but the producer wasn't happy with her look and wanted to use Judy's natural looks instead. So that's why they made her dress more low-key (she was playing a farm girl, after all) and had her go back to the brown hair and less makeup. I think it worked out just fine :)
