Hatfield's Gun

[SPOILER ALERT] Maybe I'm being dense here, but can anyone explain why, when the Apaches are attacking the stagecoach, Hatfield is about to shoot the unsuspecting Mrs. Mallory? He only fails because he is shot before he can use his one remaining bullet.

This has been discussed several times on this board in the past.

Hatfield is trying to save Lucy from the dreaded "fate worse than death," saving his last cartridge to kill her rather than allowing her to fall into the hands of the "savages."

Well-known bit of western mythology.
