Who thought the chase scene with the Indian Invasion was bad ass!!

Someone who overappreciate modern action thrillers like myself, watching Stagecoach for film class was an opportunity. I loved how Ford starts off the chase with smaller shots, and builds it slowly to that wide shot were you see the Wagon and the Indians all at the same time, I was in Awe!!! Although I haven't seen Ben Hur, I thought this was extremely complex for back then, especailly with the stuntmen jumping on the horses!

I thought the chase scene was great. John Ford did good directing.

One question. How did the Indians manage to sneak up and attack the stagecoach in plain open sight? There was no place for them to hide when Donald Meek is suddenly hit by an arrow.

I was very impressed as well -- daresay it would hold up even today.

I think the stunt man who played the indian who jumped on the horses and was subsequently shot by Ringo, and fell beneath the stagecoach's wheels, might have been Yakima Canutt. At any rate, when this stuntman asked John Ford if he needed to do it again, Ford said, whether he got the shot or not, he would never again ask any stuntman to do anything that dangerous.

"Look. I'm the lord Chief Justice. I'm Cromwell. I'm the keeper of the tower.
I take your hand. I clamp it on the Bible, on the blessed cross and I say, 'Woman has your husband made a statement on these matters?' Now, on peril of your soul, remember. What is your answer?"
"No!"
"And so it must remain."

The stuntman was most certainly Enos "Yakima" Canutt...He was John Wayne's double for many movies...http://wc06.allmovie.com/cg/avg.dll?p=avg&sql=2:84044~T1...Gives Biographical info...Canutt was also the stunt coordinator for Stagecoach, the Indian that fell from the lead horse, several other Indians that fell from their ponies, and was the guy that actually did the jump from horse team to horse team at full speed for the horses out of control stunt

Canutt started as the villianous foil for many of Wayne's Republic and Lone Star movies and also did many harrowing stunts for those films, including the wagon over the cliff and into the river for Angel and the Badman. Canutt often was the 2nd unit director for many action sequences.

That was a great scene. It was one of the most intense, exciting scenes I've watched in any film, and really had me at the edge of my seat.
