Just a perfect film!

I was really surprised by this one! I've seen a couple other of John Ford's later team-ups with John Wayne (The Searchers, The Quiet Man), but for me this one blew them away. Intriguing characters, timeless comedy, one amazing chase, and a great story to tie it all together. By the time they finally got to the confrontation with Geronimo, I was worried it would be a letdown after all the build-up, but Ford (and Yakima Canutt) really delivered!

Time to get my hands on some more of their films.

I agree, could have won the Oscar for best picture of 1939 with little argument!!

Have you checked out The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence?

One of the greatest films ever made. It's really more of a Jimmy Stewart film, but the Duke's role is unforgettable. It's where he calls Stewart "pilgrim".

This gem really set the stage (ok, pun intended) for the adult western FILM. FORT APACHE and SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON are two other can't-miss Ford/Wayne classics. Wayne also did great work in Howard Hawks' classic RED RIVER. My personal favorite Ford/Wayne westerns are STAGECOACH and THE SEARCHERS. I think Wayne's best performances were in STAGECOACH, THE SEARCHERS and RED RIVER.
