Oh my God, what a great movie! This is probably my favorite John Wayne movie and one of my favorite old movies. I love John Wayne in it, he plays the quintisential good guy/bad guy characer, and is very good looking when he is this young. It is amazing how there are no message posts here when it is such a great movie! What do you guys all think?!!!!
Hatfield was going to actually shoot Mrs. Mallory. He did not want her to be killed or maybe taken by the indians, so he was going to shot her to save her the pain.
Quite the gentleman. Ironic that the scene immediately following Hatfield's death is the one where Mrs. Mallory recognizes the sound of the cavalry charge. And who ever said patience isnt a virtue.
What I didn't get was who killed Hatfield! The audio track left something to be desired, but on playback, I could hear a faint gunshot just when Hatfield dropped his gun. OK, so he was shot. But by who? The Indians? One of the Passengers?
IIRC, only the Doc and Hatfield had handguns, and the Doc's was out of ammo. Later in the movie, one of the Calvary Officers thanked Dallas for saving Lucy's (Mallory) life. HUH? Am I asking too much for the plot to make sense?!
To answer the question as to who killed Hatfield it was the indians. As they show the indians chasing the stagecoach, you see some of them with guns and reloading them. When Hatfield turned to shoot Mrs. Mallory he was no longer paying attention the bullets that were being shot at him, and was then shot in what I assume to be his back by one of the indians.
This was a great movie--Claire Trevor's acting was a major plus for the film--especially in the scene when Ringo was walking her to her new digs--the emotion shown in her face during that walk was so agonizing you almost wanted to look away.
I agree the acting and casting in this film are outstanding. The scene where Dallas and Mrs Mallory sit next to each other for the first time at the service station is outstandingly controlled. No dilaogue just that look! It works nearly 70 years later.
I love all the comic characters in this movie and I love the way the film is written at times in Western/slang vernacular then reverts to conventional English for the better educated characters. The humour still works by the way including the wonderful Donald Meek as Mr. Peacock. Read his bio on IMDB - fascinating!!
The image of a young John Wayne atop the stagecoach, windswept and picking off indians is forever etched in my psyche. As kids, we literally jumped out of our seats when the chase scene ensued.
I love this film....most on this board do.The ones who have a negative opinion take the film out of context. You can't hold it up to the light of today's film making...Its a great simple film.
