Clearing out the woods

So Ashley and Frank went to “clear out the woods” where Scarlett was attacked. But Big Sam was in the woods and he saved her. That means not everyone in those woods was bad, just a mix of vagabonds, ex soldiers and some criminals too. Why are they shooting up the whole woods?

reply

Because they know that at least one person in the woods who violated the social modes of the Old South was in there, and nobody else in there had enough social standing to rate a thought from people like the Wilkses and the Butlers.

Ironbound systems of social class are horrible to anyone rated lower class. Your life and your property mean nothing to the people above you.

reply

Exactly. When the Union soldiers showed up at the Wilkes’ house they said “leave the justice to us”. They were aware of the trouble makers out there in the woods but they weren’t about to go in there shooting first and asking questions later.

reply

In the Old South, it was considered more socially acceptable to kill innocent people and drive others out of their homes with nothing with the clothes on their backs... than to ask an upper-clas woman to testify in court about having her bosom bared.

I just another reason to despise the slave-owning classes of the Old South.

reply

You have no idea what you're talking about.

reply

I'm talking about the incident in GWTW, where the good southern gentlemen of Atlanta drove innocent people out of their houses and probably killed others, rather than seek justice through the legal system. Innocent women undoubtedly suffered assault, harm, or lost homes that night, but they weren't well-born enough to fall under the southern "gentleman's" code of chivalry.

The gentry of the Old South were utterly vile.

reply

Again, you have no idea what you're talking about.

reply

Do so!

reply

You said: "In the Old South, it was considered more socially acceptable to kill innocent people and drive others out of their homes with nothing with the clothes on their backs... than to ask an upper-clas woman to testify in court about having her bosom bared."

When challenged you answered with: "I'm talking about the incident in GWTW" , which is a work of fiction.

Befus is correct - you do not what you are talking about.

reply

Do look up tg he history of the KKK. FYI it was and is organization devoted to the use of terror to maintaining the interests of white "gentlemen", and has always been ill intended as a way to get around the legal system.

reply

Don't claim you're a historian now. You made a statement and supported it using a work of fiction. We're done

reply

I see the idea of "historical fiction" is too complicated for you to grasp, as is the idea th hat one can read both fiction and history.

"Done" it is.

reply

They cleared out the shantytown. Why do you think they were "shooting up the whole woods"?

reply

Because the officer said they were shooting up the woods. Because Rhett said the men went there to “clear out the woods”.

It was night and they were shooting people, strangers to them, just because they were in the woods. How could they tell who were the bad types and avoid killing good guys like Big Sam?
