I MEAN CMON SCARLETT I'D POUR MYSELF OVER RHETT LIKE HOT FIRE
yes she waaaaassss in love with ashley but maybe people back in those days dont rlly care for at-the-time-being lust, they want true love asap. or is it just about scarlett's true obsession that got in the way?
She is such a dominant personality this could have been an unconscious wish to be with someone she could dominate. What she had not yet learned is that you can't respect anyone you can dominate and that there is no love without respect.
The Fabio Principle: Puffy shirts look best on men who look even better without them.
You have to understand that Ashley was the only eligible bachelor who didn't fall prey to Scarlett's wiles and charms. So Scarlett, in her foolish, adolescent mind, convinced herself that Ashley was in love with her. It was just her willful vanity, that's all.
Yes, Ashley did have a physical desire for Scarlett, but his true, real love was Melanie. Both Rhett and Melanie were aware of that fact, but narcissistic Scarlett refused to open her eyes to the truth of the matter--until Melanie was dying. It was then she finally realized that Rhett was her soul mate, but by then it was too late.
Scarlett's infatuation might have been easier to understand had Ashley been played by a younger, more attractive actor. Leslie Howard was terribly miscast, but that fact has been discussed many times already.
By today's standards, and even as far back as 100 years ago, many women preferred 'Rhett' over 'Ashley', but by the standards in which the film was set, 'Rhett' and 'Scarlett' too, was an outcast.
Haha. I also think Rhett is far more likable. I really agree that Scarlett is obsessed with Ashley, not in love with him or even really attracted to him. I think it bugs her that he is the only guy not fawning over her.
