or was it an act because she was so persistent and he was such a gentleman as to not want her to look/feel like a fool? i can't count how many times i've seen the movie and i've always wondered. am i totally off-base here? any thoughts?

i hate that imdb is discontinuing the message boards! i am signing the petition. hope you will too.

My opinion is that he loved Melanie, but liked the attention from Scarlett.
There were times he definitely led her on.

I think he loved Scarlett, but not like what he felt for Melanie. I think he was more attracted physically to her like many of her suitors were.
