shareI've heard that Errol Flynn was under serious consideration for the part of Rhett Butler- that would have been an interesting alternative.

I think Flynn was the second choice for Rhett if MGM wouldn't consent to lending out Clark Gable, whom opinion polls had shown to be the public's overwhelming choice. Flynn seems to have been given serious consideration for the role of Ashley Wilkes, too.
Olivia de Havilland, before being cast as Melanie, appears to have also been considered for the role of Scarlett, along with every woman in Hollywood from Bette Davis to David O. Selznick's cleaning lady.
