Scorned Woman?

Hello!

I watched this movie on the Turner channel last night, and I have a question.

I stepped out at the end, and came back to the the commentator at the end say
Betty played the "woman scorned" so well.

Sorry?

Julie, put her suitor is such a terrible position, not just once but twice.
When the only board member that seemed to be supporting her suitors position
suggest that he take a cane to her.......

Now part of me says he did the right thing and just walked away from the whole
situation, but part of me says he should have taken her over his knee, (as
was appropriate at the time).

Why was she the scorned woman? The situation was entirely of her making
was it not??

Thanks
BonAdventure

She did make many mistakes and in return she was scorned by society.

*Everyone stepped away from her at the ball while Julie and Prescott were dancing together. Plus, as much as Julie wanted to go home, Pres wouldn't let her because he was fighting fire with fire when Julie put on the red dress to spite him.

*Preston went to the north and married Amy- who almost the complete opposite of Julie (I still believe he was in love with Julie at the time)

*Buck died during the duel, knowing Julie's intentions and Pres' brother told Julie so in front of everybody, making Julie look like the rascal instead of Buck.

*Here's the biggest one: Julie's aunt Belle compared her with a woman named Jezebel, who did evil in the sight of God.

I just saw this movie tonight for the first time on Tuner channel, and I didn't get why everyone blamed her for Buck's death. If he knew what she was up to why not just confront her, why die in a duel??

I'm guessing it's because he Buck loved Julie and was trying to show her what a terrible mistake it was toying with his feelings.
