Amazing red dress scene

Especially in the light of this being a black and white film, the scene where Julie wore the red dress to the ball has to be one of the most remarkable sequences in film history. It's so well done, it's almost like that dress is screaming out its red to us.

Meh. We're supposed to believe Julie, a smart person, is so headstrong she doesn't know that castigation awaits her for non-conformity within the community?
Who's that dumb?
Who reads their community values this poorly?

It was designed to be a memorable setpiece. But I find it hokey as can be.

She thought she could get away with it, because she was pretty, popular and engaged to an up and coming banker. Such rules are made for the 'normal people,' and Julie considered herself above them. She knew it would shock people, but she didn't think it would matter so much. She didn't realise how engrained the community values were.

That's how I read into it anyway.

It's opener, out there, in the wide, open air

Thanks for this, I expected as much when I read onepotato's horribly misguided post in this thread - and I hope I never get to read another of his/her posts or reviews!

It just bugged me that it was sleeveless and strapless. I don't think that style was worn by anybody in those days, even bad women.

It's not easy having a gd time.

I think it might have had black lace straps or sleeves, and Julie, being Julie, tucked them in...making the dress strapless.

I'm sorry but that dress was not memorable at all. I don't think it would be any better if it was in color either. The dress just all around did not look good, mostly for me because the skirt was so narrow. I actually believe almost every other gown Julie has in the film is much better than the "red dress" especially the white one.

True,I doubt strapless was popular.
