How does Julie betray Buck?

My DVD keeps freezing during the crucial parts!! When buck dies, evidently he says something like "I know Julie did it". Did she do something to cause his death???

She used him in her little game to make her fiance jealous. She wanted the men to fight for her. Although she wanted her fiance to win, it was still a cruel thing to do for her to feel special. Of course things didn't work out the way she'd planned them, but still. The film is about her manipulation and how it destroys her relationships and affects those who have been drawn into her game. So Buck felt betrayed by her upon learning she was just using him again after Pres returns. And that's why Buck went into the duel, and I feel he lost on purpose. So it's her fault he's dead.

I have never seen this scene you guys are talking about, I only watch the movie on TCM and it always goes from the shots being fired back to Julie's house. Then there is a mention from Ted of what Buck said to him.

The end of the duel isn't shown. But when Ted surprisingly returns from the duel and says Buck's dead he follows it up with "He knew what you had done.
Before he died he told me so."
(Talking about Julie's manipulation)

What I didn't get was the exact reason why Buck and Ted had the duel. I know that these things are supposed to be matters of honour, but what did she did to make them so angry?

Julie insinuated to Buck Cantrell that the now married Preston had been improper with her because he had been drinking. Even though she was the one being improper by kissing Preston and trying to make him say he loved her. She knew Buck would never allow her to be dishonored in such a way and he'd rise to the occasion as a gentleman to defend her. After Preston left Buck insulted his wife but Preston's brother Ted stepped in and said that Buck didn't realize how Julie was using him first to have a go at Preston and then his wife. Buck then told him not to speak of Julie that way when Ted then told Buck he was loud crass and anything but a gentlemen. Buck took them as fighting words and Ted refused to back down from the duel. Whe Julie tried to get Buck to back down he wouldn't. She knew it was her fault his honor was at stake even though he knew he'd likely die.

Pres was no longer her fiancé. He came back to town married remember? Julie knew that Pres was not one to step all over himself holding his tongue, being polite rather than speak his mind. While Buck was so much a Southern gentleman he took offense at anything said about the South or its Women folk. Julie knew it would not take much to get the men arguing since Pres's wife was from the North and he seemed to have become more liberal in his thinking. Like when he offered to have a drink with Uncle Cato the butler who knew that was unthinkable to do.
