George Brent is excellent in Jezebel

It seems George Brent has a rep as an actor with a limited range - and I wouldn't disagree with someone who said he plays a lot of his roles stiffly (even if he was a bit unlucky in that in those days of the studio system he was basically owned by the studios and was stuck with playing similar roles in many films). But I think he is great as Buck Cantrell, a role that seems a bit of a departure from the noble, good-guy roles I have usually seen him in (not that I am a George Brent expert by any means, this has just been my experience in what I've seen him in). He adds a lot to Jezebel, IMHO.

'Sanctity Of Life'. You believe in it? Personally, I think it's a bunch of s**t.

George Brent has been unjustly vilified as as stiff and wooden. You are spot on in saying that he is excellent in this film, as he was in many of the roles he played opposite Bette Davis. She seemed to inspire him to do his best. He was much more than a sounding board for her portrayals. They played off of each other with sparks and fireworks, if only in a subtle way. She did the same for Herbert Marshall, who seemed stiff and wooden in many films. Both of these men played relatively weak characters opposite Davis, but they portrayed them as flesh and blood with subtlies other actors with other co-stars would have never achieved.

Personally, I'm always glad to see the name "George Brent" in the cast list.

I agree .. Mr. Brent was the only stand out in this movie ... If the character Julie had had a brain ,she would have married Buck .. I know I would have .. lol .

I'm glad somebody posted this. George Brent does get a bad rep, and perhaps somewhat understandably, but he is brilliant in this. I think this film really benefits from the performances of Davis, Fonda and Brent, without which the film may have come off as silly.

As for Herbert Marshall, again I agree to some extent, but even without Bette Davis he produced some great performances. I think he was a noticeably better actor than Brent and of course he had that gorgeous voice that was only ever surpassed by George Sanders.

Old films and actors are great :)

I fully agree. Mr. Brent was a much better actor than he's usually given credit for, and especially in "Jezebel". He was always so charming and self-confident without being arrogant, and that's one of the things that make him so appealing to my eyes. I'm so glad that Bette considered him her favorite male co-star. I would have even cast him in others Bette vehicles such as Now, Voyager. Nothing against Paul Henreid, but I think he was totally miscast in that one, whereas Brent would have been excellent, IMHO.
