Julie v. Scarlett

This isn't a thread about the two movies GWTW v. Jezebel, but about the characters. Frankly, after watching Bette in Jezebel, I have to say that the character of Julie would've kicked Scarlett's behind. What do you all think?

What an interesting question! Though it would have been a close match, I think Scarlett would have won the day. When you pit their actions against each other, Scarlett was just a tad more vindictive and mean spirited. She did, after all, take her sister's fiance away from her. And she allowed herself to get into rescue-worthy situations, such as when she insisted on driving her carriage all by herself even through dangerous areas, which eventually caused the death of her husband Frank. She also actively tried to take Ashley away from his wife and new child, as well as marrying someone that she didn't love, just for spite.

But I mostly think this because Scarlett actually murdered someone herself (that Yankee that stopped by Tara shortly after Scarlett and Melanie had arrived). I can't see Julie committing a violent act by herself, though she sure knew how to provoke violence in others.

At least Scarlett had a "cause"...Tara to fight for...when she wasn't scheming to take Ashley away from Melanie, of course. I can't see any "cause" of Julie's, except at the end, when we're supposed to believe that she went to the quarentine island with Press to prove she was worthy of loving him.

I don't agree that you can call that murder. The soldier was a deserter and a marauder. He was essentially a common highway robber. The only reason he didn't threaten her with violence (which he would have used if she had put up resistance, except that she pre-empted him) is because he didn't even conceive that she was capable of protecting herself or threatening him in order to do so. She had every right to defend herself in her own home. He ended up dead, but that was his problem. I have heard that at the Atlanta premier, this act resulted in a tumultuous standing ovation.

The novel Scarlett might be able to put up a good fight (though I still think she'd lose), but Vivien Leigh's Scarlett would get her butt handed to her by Julie. No question.

I'd have to say first, the question is too general. If you believe Julie would, hypothetically, have been able to kick Scarlett's behind, you have to put that belief into a certain context. In a knock-down drag-out cat fight, I expect Julie would have gotten the better of her, but in terms of getting the man she wants, I would bet Scarlet would win that one. As for who is the better schemer, they both seem supremely adept at that. Can you think of other means of testing this proposition?
