Welts and Ointment Quote

There is a quote in this movie about men disciplining women...something along the lines of taking a stick to her, helping to apply ointment to her welts and her liking it or thanking him for it. And then buying her a diamond broach.

Does anyone know the exact quote?

Thanks!

Believe it or not I came here to comment on that very line. I can't remember it word for word. I don't think it was mentioned in there that she would like it. It, basically, said that the way to control a woman when she out of line was to "take a whip to her and then apply the oil to her blisters and then to buy her a diamond brouche (sp?)."

In the southern-belle thing the above quote was about right. I had an aunt that this quote could have come close to fitting. I am from Georgia and I will say that I HATE the stereotypical southern-belle with all I am. I like a woman that can and will speak up and doesn't need to be taken care of.

The part about her "liking" the beating was in reference to the respect that a southern "lady" had for a strong man. Julley is basically disrespectful to her man and pushes him. In a twisted kind of way she was asking him to do something to prove he was a "real" man.

This is not in any way an endorsement of that type of behavior by me, however.

I will watch it soon and write down the quote exactly.

Yeah, that was pretty much the quote. He didn't say she would like it, but he did say "she would thank him for it". Not sure if that was in reference to the diamond necklace/broach you bought her after you beat her, or if she'd be so grateful for the lesson and discipline that she'd thank you.

Crazy times.

He says to put lard on the welts, not oil or ointment.

This thread is old but here is the exact quote:

"He'd have cut him a hickory, sir. A hickory. He'd have flailed the living daylights out of her... and then helped put lard on her welts and bought her a diamond brooch. That's what he'd have done, sir, and she'd have loved it."

Pretty close, jcarpenter-1. But here's a couple of small corrections. Hickory stick. ....that's what he would have done, sir, and she'd have loved HIM. Very important distinction between loving a beating and loving the husband. Changes the whole meaning of the advice.
