The Howard Hawks Style

Posters here have talked a lot about Hawks' style of movie making and his ability to bring out the best performances from his actors and actresses. For example, his learning on-the-fly how to get Hepburn to do slapstick comedy for this movie.

One story about Hawks that I heard was about his filming a scene in one movie, but probably not this one. He was near the camera and, instead of traditionally saying "Cut!" to end filming, he reached one arm out and placed his hand in front of the lens, and just said to the cameraman, "That's enough."

When any director has enough confidence in his or her own ability, there's no need to make a big deal with formality.
