They need to resurrect the screwball comedy genre

Someone needs to convince the Hollywood producers that they should make more outrageous screwball comedies like this.

If you like screwball comedies, give "Brain Donors" a try with John Turturo in it.

They sort of gave it a try with Radioland Murders, which my family really enjoys. But a lot of people didn't get it. On the discussion board, some people complained the jokes were too fast. I hope they don't watch His Girl Friday. It might be too confusing for them.

Overdo what? ...freedom? This warm glow...that promises everything's going to be all hunky dunky?

Funny that you mentioned His Girl Friday. I love these types of movies, but that one did confuse me...one rapid-fire comedy there. I need to give it another watch.

Bluntly, the average moviegoer (who is often a teen or young adult) lacks the patience or inclination (and often the intelligence) to parse the sublimely witty dialogue (often at a fast and furious pace) that marks the screwball comedy. Even a merely average '30s screwball comedy (say, something like Hands Across the Table or If You Could Only Cook) reads like Shakespeare compared to 99% of today's comedies (which are almost all either bodily function gross out comedies or toothless "romcoms" aimed at the date market). What would most of today's moviegoers make of Twentieth Century, Bringing Up Baby, Easy Living, His Girl Friday, or almost any Preston Sturges film? Sadly, they'd rather watch Joanh Hill or lummox Seth Rogen than William Powell or Cary Grant.

Try "Little Miss Sunshine" or even "Two Weeks Notice".

They aren't recent, but check the Pink Panther movies (the originals, not the Steve Martin ones).... 'that's a priceless Steinway' 'not any more.....' or the Goldie Hawn/Chevy Chase movies such as Foul Play or Seems Like Old Times - they are late 70s/early 80s.

Raising Arizona (1987) is considered to be a screwball. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.

Son, you got a panty on your head.
