I always wondered how see got the leopard in her apartment and no one noticed.

Why do you think that no one noticed? It's New York; it would have to be a lot more unusual than a leopard going into an apartment building to surprise a New Yorker.

If pets are not allowed in the building, I suppose someone might have complained, but they didn't or they were satisfied that Baby was not going to be there for very long.

I think the regulations on importing and keeping exotic pets were rather different 76 years ago, than they may be today.

I think they were supposed to be living in a decadent society where anything goes, or a doorman could be bribed to look the other way.
