Intercostal clavicle

One of my favorite movies of all time, it never fails to make me laugh and put in a good mood. I must confess I never knew how to spell intercostal clavicle, so I finally looked it up on Imdb, and: something's wonky. Apparently intercostal means "between the ribs" and clavicle is (collar)bone. Of course, I'm not a dinosaur expert, but, wha?

reply

I guess the movie takes place in some strange universe that had some dinosaurs with shoulders located within their rib cage. In such a universe, unlike our own, there are also leopards in South America.

I've been married to one Marxist and one Fascist, and neither one would take the garbage out.

reply

I didn't know that leopards are not native to South America. Learned something new today! They should've either made it a jaguar or changed the continent. But Katherine Hepburn was amazing in how she dealt with the leopard, kudo's to her. Didn't Madonna try to imitate her when she filmed Desperately seeking Susan? I heard that, during the shoot, she kept prodding and teasing the animal.

All the "facts" are meant to be nonsense.

It was meant to have a semi-phallic tone to it, which is symbolic considering what she's doing to his life.

reply

Really? I see your point of course, but, did you read this somewhere or is it your opinion? I'd just never heard that. And yes, she emasculates him somewhat, but then he already was quite domesticated by his fiancee. Men (and women) tend to have a certain type they are attracted to. I'd rather say that he allowed her to do to his life whatever she's doing, meaning : he does have input.

reply

I remember reading something a while back, but it's not such an important point that I'll argue. And yes, he's rather "domesticated" at the beginning, but she strips away whatever (male) dignity he had, as they're looking for his lost "bone", one of the few euphemisms they could have gotten away with in the late '30s.

But whatever, it's one of my favorite "screwball" comedies, and great Hawks.

reply

Haha, okay, I get it now that you put the word bone in between brackets . And I agree, fantastic screwball comedy, the timing alone is so well done (eg the scene in the restaurant with the olive/coat etc.) Say there'd be a remake one day (God forbid), imho only Sandra Bullock would be able to get it right. No clue as to which male actor really.

Didn't Streisand do some movie more or less based on this one?

reply

Sorry for taking so long to reply, BoxOfficePoison, been so busy I forgot. You're right! That was this movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069495/plotsummary, which I've actually seen too. It's quite enjoyable if memory serves, but can't hold a candle to the original. Btw, the film Madonna made that was almost a copy was not Desperately seeking Susan but this one: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094321/.

On a side note, I think it's awesome that an 80 year old movie still has a messageboard that is this active.

reply

Ironic, when you realize the message board wasn't active at all when the movie first came out.

reply

Haha! But yeah, the movie met a lukewarm reception at best at the time, if memory serves. Didn't someone try to sabotage Hepburn's career at some point? I did read her autobiography, but I forget who. She sure was a remarkable lady.

reply

The Streisand/Ryan O'Neil film "What's Up Doc?" is (very) loosely based on BUB. Also very entertaining!

The film was also remade, more or less, as Somethint Wild, with Jeff Daniels and Melanie Griffith.

There's a rib that is tucked behind the clavicle in most vertebrates. The clavicle (collar bone) is attached at the shoulder and sternum, it appears to be jointed between the ribs, intercostaly. Sorry to get at sciencey, it's a habit of mine.

reply

I think the science in this film is from the same source as most of the "facts" in Star Trek The Next Generation.
