... was a Catalonian bandit from the first decade of the 17th century who, like RH, had a reputation for chivalry and generosity. Apparently Cervantes met him personally, for he wrote about him in chapter 60 of the 2d part of DON QUIXOTE.
Obviously Robin Locksley was not the only bandit in history blessed with a legenday fame; what other RHs are there in the world? And please: no mention of miscreants like Bonnie and Clyde, who were nothing like our hero.

The French outlaw Cartouche has a somewhat similar reputation (beginning of the XVIIIth century). So does Louis Mandrin, who was a very popular and well-beloved smuggler.
