If Lady Marian is Illegitimate, ...
... why is she so important to Richard and John?

I don't remember anything saying she was illegitimate. When do they say that?
"Occasionally I'm callous and strange."
The GOOFS section explains that the FITZ of Fitzwalter indicates that she is illegitimate. As a 58 y/o who only learned about it in this year, that detail naturally intrigues me; does it have any particular significance to the story?

Right, thank you! I had totally forgotten that Marian was named Fitzwalter in this movie.
Fitzwalter is indeed derived from the French "fils de Walter" meaning son of Walter. Like other Fitz-somethings, it's a Norman name. But it is not necessarily at all a bastard's name. I suppose the goofs section has jumped to conclusions and was influenced by the meaning of the last name Fitzroy (son of a king) which, indeed, has been used as a family name for royal bastards on occasion. Henry VIII's bastard son was called Henry Fitzroy.

It wouldn't be the first time that I saw something on an IMDb "Goofs" page that was incorrect.
