Jerry The Nipper

It was in this film that Irene Dunne first utters the name 'Jerry The Nipper' implying that Grant's character was often fond of a stiff drink or two.

The Following year in Bringing Up Baby, in the scene when they're all in the 'lock up' Katherne Hepburn says "Haven't you heard of Jerry The Nipper?" To which Grant replies that "She's making it up out of Motion Pictures she's seen"

Has anyone else picked up on that one?

reply

I didn't pick that up, but I think that's fantastic...thanks for sharing!

Yes, I did.

"Dry your eyes baby, it's out of character."

I never caught it either - thanks!

I trust I make myself obscure.

You should have that added to the trivia section for this movie (and Bringing Up Baby if it's not there. I didn't check). I have both movies on DVD and never noticed that reference. Thanks for bringing it up :)

reply

Yep. Because I'd watched both of them in the same night.

I watched Bringing up Baby first, then The Awful Truth straight after. It's fun to make little intertextual connections like this!
