Yeah, it wouldn't have been as good without the dog. I was amused by the custody battle over Mr. Smith, how he "sang" with Jerry and how the dog thought they were playing hide-and-seek with the hat.
Don't forget that seeing Mr Smith initially in the pet store (?) was how they met - I don't think that's an insignificant point as to why they'd each want custody as well. I think they each loved the dog for himself, but I also think there was sentimental value, even if it was just underlying or subconscious. Or just symbolic by the the writers.
That dog is the greatest. Asta. I'm blanking on the real name at the moment, but what a great dog!
