Big Irene Dunne fan, but this was not a favorite
I was looking forward to seeing this film, as it is a favorite of many Irene Dunne fans, and one I had not seen. But I must say that I just found it annoying. The shrill, incessant whistling by Melvyn Douglas! I know it was SUPPOSED to be annoying but I still couldn't stand it! And if it wasn't that, it was Dunne's operatic singing, or the dog barking, or Dunne and Douglas singing Three Blind Mice at the top of their lungs. Too much noise!
I kept fast forwarding through the parts that bothered me. I also did not appreciate that the cat's tail getting caught in the door and the dog getting caught in the mousetrap were used for laughs.
And another thing, the whole premise that Dunne is being treated as this innocent ingenue by her aunts and the whole town strains credulity considering that she was 38 when this movie came out! Many women had teenage children at that point in life back in 1936! Even if she was a single woman living with her aunts, to act as though she's this sheltered debutante is just silly. She's obviously a mature woman.
I just couldn't get into this one.
