Great Little Movie...

I just happened to catch this on TCM this morning. It was so cute. Even though the outcome is predictable, the actors are so fun to watch. Jimmy Stewart had a very small part, but it was clear, he had talent and presence even back then. Wow, Robert Taylor was one of the most handsome men. And Janet Gaynor was a great actress and very believable.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie the first time I saw it!

What a charmer Robert Taylor was in this role, and deadly handsome!!

Do you ever wonder within the context of the movie that he and Janet Gaynor's
character consummated their marriage that night after leaving the judge's house?

The way he was so attentive and making eyes at her, and maybe
charming the pants off of her, and because they referred to him as a
Playboy, and not to mention the way he drove his "whip" (car) around;
you just knew that he was out to "get some"!

What do you think?

Yeah I was pleasantly surprised when I watched this a little while back. Somewhat unusual though to see Stewart as a kind of "goofball" supporting character with no chance of getting the girl. Everyone starts somewhere I guess, but even with Taylor nearby, Stewart wasn't an eyesore or anything. *shrug*

I just finished watching this on TCM. Great movie and Dawn is right, Taylor was very handsome in it and Gaynor was very believable as the small town Kay. Only thing that was a bit off for me was after she left to go back to her parents', she reads the newspaper article about divorcing and out of nowhere he shows up. I wish they had shown a bit about his trying to figure out if he should go after her and maybe talking to his parents about it.

Yeah, this was predictable but very enjoyable. The actress playing Priscilla was very believable as the snobby fiancee.

Isn't "Small Town Girl" cozy? The premise of it might seem absurd by today's standards but there's a lot of charm packed into this little film. Robert Taylor was indeed gorgeous (plus charismatic!) and Janet Gaynor was charming in this, as expected. I don't know what it is about this little film that I like so much---is it the slow, little town--the warm monotony of it? Or the excitement of crisp, autumn nights from a time when people actually socialized and celebrated together? Obviously society wasn't better, necessarily, people simply interacted more--"face-to-face"--out of necessity.

I'd bet they crashed the car, in the scene whee they're rivng back to Boston, on old "Boston Post Road" (an antique military route) which ran through Connecticut and into Boston before the turnpike existed. It still exists and runs through Sharon, MA where part of it is conserved.

I totally love this movie. Janet Gaynor was one of the greatest actresses of her era and I think you can see it even in something as light as this film. And Robert Taylor is very underrated and this role totally makes great use of his assets as an actor and a personality. I gave this film a 10 star review here on IMDB, it's one of the most underrated films of the 1930's I feel.

...if we want this on DVD, everyone interested should go to the "TCM" website and vote for it to be released (type "Small Town Girl" in TCM's search prompt; the voting bar is to the right, in the siderail)! Enough support might get this on dvd!

Wow, part of the road still exists??? That is awesome. Would love to see it.

I don't know what it is about this movie but I just love it. It is the definition of cozy. Janet Gaynor and Robert Taylor was brilliant together. We have an original photo from that movie where she is holding the lemonade glass for him to help his sore throat. It's a lovely photo.

I'm posting to this thread because very few people visit the Discussion Board for "Small Town Girl."

According to Stephen Ambrose in his biography of Richard Nixon, his future wife Patricia Nixon had a walk-on part in this movie. (This was, of course, long before she met Nixon.) Has anyone seen a woman in this picture who could possibly be the future First Lady?
