Cooper - yes, Sandler - no!
Among its many virtues, "Mr. Deeds..." stands as a testament to Gary Cooper's career-long charisma, youthful good looks, and credibility as an American Everyman. Before looking in on this film again recently, I was going to follow it up with a viewing of the Adam Sandler remake, "Deeds". Now, I just don't think I can. How can you reconcile a movie championing common sense, honesty and clear-thinking (on the part of Cooper's Deeds) with one that admires (as happens too often) the fortuitous instincts of someone who would most charitably be labelled an idiot-savant, like Sandler? No thanks!
