302 '1' Votes on IMDB

I can see not thinking it's the greatest movie of all time, but a 1!!!??? Come on!! I imagine that the greatest criticism is that it's "too quiet."

do you think that this movie and city lights are funnier than duck soup and a night at the opera ?

the differnce is that marx bros movies are just comedies, and chaplin movies are basicaly dramas told with a lot of humour.

Everyone is different... I usually wouldn't watch a movie unless Roger Ebert liked it. Then I found I how much I disagreed with him on a few films. So be it... I think "To Be and To Have" should be in the top 250. But that's just me!

Look at LOTR:RotK, it has 8500+ votes of 1... almost as many votes as this movie has altogether.

Every movie has tons of "1" votes. Wish I could change that, but yeah.

I gave ROTK a 1 because it doesnt deserve to be in the top 250. A highly overrated film that strays far from the book and is longer than it should be. Good, yes, but it doesn't deserve to be in the top 10. I can think of about 100 different films that are far more deserving.

reply

Why don't you rate Return of the King what you think it actually deserves then? Your lone "1-vote" isn't enough to take it out of the Top 250 anyway.

What about all the people who give things 10 just because they enjoyed it. Some people do need to be more critical, and some less.

reply

I agree. Some more, some less. I've rated dozens of movies on IMDb, but I've only given four 10's.

i'm pretty sure the saying "don't judge a book by its cover" applies to movies too. if you had seen it, you would know that the cover meant.

reply

omg!!!!!! YOU ARE A RETARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you rated the movie "1" just by watching the dvd cover????? and you have the balls to say it???? i can't believe it.....the rating is for the film itself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! not for anything else.....the cover????? what kind of judgment is this......YOU SUCK BIG TIME!!!!!!

If I were monitoring these message boards, I would find the voting average for a movie like Lord of the Rings (any of them), and have some sort of formula that makes lower ratings (as they become such a high-skewed amount, and obviously bringing down the average on purpose) weighted less. This can be done in a number of ways such as comparing the median and the percentage of votes at or above that. If 90% of the votes are above the median of 9 (for example) and the movie has a TON of 1's bringing the average down to 8.5 or something, have a calculation method that brings down the weighting value of each 1. Now, with respect to people voting 10's to boost the movies rating. Many people who vote a 10 do it because they believe the movie is worth a ten. Very seldom do these well-rated movies deserve a 1, 2, 3 ... or even a 4. However, these movies (as well as many other) do deserve 10's. On this site, you rarely see people going out of their way to bring a low rated movie (like 2.5-5.5) up to 10. Anyone who would must have liked it enough anyways to actually give it a 10, no harm done. It is these haters that should be better controlled. There is a similar method used with the top 250 voting. Something like "regular voters" votes are worth more or something. And as a movie gets more votes it helps. However, something needs to be implemented to control obvious haters. And it would have to be for more then just 1's, however control each value accordingly. Reduce the weighting of 1 the most, then 2, followed all the way UP TO the median value. This will make it so that people don't just start putting 2's and 3's to lower the average. As the weightings of these numbers wouldn't be reduced as much as, say a 1, they wouldn't need to be as they don't bring down the average as much. In the end, a movie with a high median (or something that guages a "good" movie by popular vote) could have some protection from haters without altogether removing their votes, because then there would be no point of voting.
