Department Store Music

Does anyone know what music is playing from the moment when Chaplin starts to work in the department store untill the skating scene?

It's a really catchy theme, isn't it? I believe most of the music was written by Chaplin himself. However, (as with much of the score of the 1942 reissue of "The Gold Rush") he often used popular pieces to interpolate into the score. Note the credit in the opening: "Popular Musical Numbers Used by Permission," or something similar. However, the theme reappears so often it was most likely written by Chaplin. It has no title that I'm aware of, but it should appear on any CD issue of Chaplin's film music, or the soundtrack CD of "Modern Times" (which is rare).

The main theme is called "Smile". Someone actually wrote words to it... I don't know if it was Chaplin.
