It's sad...

It's sad how little my generation under appreciates Chaplin nowadays. My high school film history class has been showing a lot of silent black and white film from the 1910's to the '30s, and when the movies end and the lights come back on, over half the class is asleep. I'm 18, and although I wouldn't put any of Chaplin's films as all-time favorites, I would never deny that he was a genius and a landmark filmmaker for his time. Modern Times isn't exactly his best (the lack of story structure drives me crazy, but it is extremely well-made, 8/10) but still very great. People would rather go see a film with Adam Sandler or Jack Black than a film like this and be enlightened on cinema history.

By the way, I'm 18, consider myself a growing film addict, and my favorite Chaplin film from what I've seen is The Vagabond.

Have you seen City Lights ? The Gold Rush? See those if you haven't yet. They are really good. Glad you enjoy his work. Indeed, nowadays young people enjoy junk movies and few people can appreciate great works fo art. Too bad. It's their loss.

I just watched this on TCM too. Wonderful film, very funny. Now I need to see City Lights. I rented it a long time ago, but unfortunately never got to it.

I'm 16 btw, and agree that not enough people my age enjoy movies like this.

There will be milkshakes.

I'm 15, and a few of my friends know who Chaplin is, but that's about the extent of it. It's a shame, as he has so many terrific films. They're so fun just to watch and see the gags he would come up with. I'm probably with the majority in saying that "City Lights" is my favorite if his, but "The Gold Rush" is a close second.
