The origins of 'gamin'
Originally a French word, it is actually two words: gamin (masc.) and gamine (fem.).
Strictly speaking gamin is masculine. It sort of fits because Paulette Goddard plays a sort of tomboy. The word has come to mean a street urchin, irrespective of gender.
