Relationship

I'm sure somebody has pointed this out and discussed this before.

But I'm guessing the relationship between Chaplin & Godards characters was kept platonic with little to no hints of sex or romance to avoid controversy back in those days, seeing as the characters weren't married?

Escpecially the part where Chaplin doesn't even sleep in the same room or for that matter same house as Godard in their fallen down shack. Found it quite funny.

Well it's not just that they arn't married, she was not even 18, if it was sexual that would have made the Tramp a pedo.

I don't know what the age of consent was back then and in that state, but even if she wasn't 18, it still wouldn't make the tramp a pedophile. For him to be that, she has to be a child in the biological sense. And from the looks of it she was not a pre-pubescent child.

But I'm guessing that you could argue that in judicial terms she is still a child when she hasn't turned 18, I just react negatively to the word pedophile when she obviously is not a child.

Was her age ever stated? I assumed she was early to mid 20's judging from her appearance.

The gamin's age is never stated, but the juvenile authorities are after her, so that would make her 16 at most.

Paulette Goddard was in her mid-20s at the time the film was made.

The situation is pretty ironic when you consider Chaplin's marital history, but perhaps there have already been enough threads on that topic.

This is something that struck me when I first watched the film as an adult, after having seen it many times as a kid. Some of the scenes between them use typical rom-com situations, down to the Meet Cute, and if you know that Chaplin and Goddard were an item in real life at the time, it adds to your expectation. But since Goddard's character is identified in the film as a teenager, despite the actress having been well into her twenties, I think that's why the movie made the nature of their relationship ambiguous. I'm surprised they got away with even hinting at the possibility of a romance between a teen and an older man; it wasn't subtle.
