As much as I love "Modern Times", I'd have to say my favorite is "The Great Dictator". This is mainly because of the amusing interaction between characters many of which were based upon real people, like Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, etc. I also like it because of some of the history around it,(such as Hitler having watched it, and the thought of American P.O.W.s smuggling it into private theaters during World War 2.

I ENJOYED Modern Times the most. Basically that means it made me laugh the most. I nearly had a seizure laughing at the bit where he chases after the lady with the nut shaped buttons on her dress with his spanners. I was around 10 when I first watched that scene. The others had more pathos perhaps - but its a long time since I saw them all.

My favorite is "City Lights: its both hilarious and the ending brings a tear to my eye every time. I have seen "Modern Times" several times and I initially gave it a very high rating, but after re-seeing it just now, I'm inclined to lower it. It certainly has moments of genius, undoubtedly, but also moments where the Tramp is not a loveabe naif, but more like a moron you want to smack on the head! Example: helping his new boss as the mechanic's assistant - would anyone be quite that blundering and unthinking?

The Circus, it's the funniest and has an incredibly poignant ending

haven't seen Limelight though..
