Modern Times (1936)
I haven't seen many silent films, but it's more because of not having the opportunity to. Being in Film class here at my school has helped with that a lot though, and this is my second Chaplin film.
It's rather amusing, charming, and entertaining. It's hilarious, especially in the first 20 minutes, and there's always enough wit and creativity from Chaplin. If there's one problem to be had it's that the gags do feel repetitive and overwhelming at times. I felt this way with The Kid as well though, and while it does lose me from time to time it doesn't damper my opinion of the film overall. Also interesting to note the background of the film, and the title. Chaplin makes a goofy, light-hearted comedy not just during one of the worst times the United States has ever had, but also taking place in the middle of it all. It's a good contrast in tone, but the reality is there. Definitely recommended!
