Beautiful Convincing Boy
Hepburn's performance in this movie is probably the most convincing female portrayal of a boy. I really had to do a double-take a couple of times and remind myself that this was the Katherine Hepburn. Fantastic!

shareAgreed...I just saw it, and it was really amazing.

yeah she was defo fantastic in this. i also just saw and i'm a long time fan. what i like about it is the mix of hepburn classic acting and completely different experimental stuff. her turn as a boy is SO interesting, the weird girl girl stuff that isn't quite pushing boundaries of the day but then again it really is. her manner and walk and all that are superbly watchable as un homme and then as a girl you get classic heartbreaking hepburn, the scene after the funeral, where she resigns herself to heartbreak forever, accepts a proposal from a lech out of depression and then mourns her father and her own sad life in 3/4 frames of not much movement and yet conveying everything.
LOVED it.
also the scene where your artist chap finds out she's a lady. beautiful scene. thrilled with this oddity but it will never be rediscovered as more than a cult film because of the offbeat love stories.
Agreed!
Personally, I think I have too much bloom. Maybe that's the trouble with me.
This scene, when shes twirling around in the 3/4 length dress, hat and heels ...
she is just drop dead gorgeous IMHO. Its one of the great things about old movies - shes covered almost head to toe but I find her to be soooo much more attractive (and HOT) than any of todays barely clothed/naked 'ladies'. All leg(s) yet they are covered down to the ankle. No fake boobs, minimal make up etc.
OK, ya get the idea ... I'm smitten with Kate.
I have to agree. Most movies that feature a girl masquerading as a guy leaving you wondering how in the hell anyone would think that was a boy, but Katharine... wowie. She really did look like a (very attractive) boy. That scene when Maudie draws the Don Ameche mustache on her, and she makes that "Hey, baby" face!
Nice!
"He's already attracted to her. Time and monotony will do the rest."
Does anyone know if she actually had her hair cut for the role? It didn't look like a wig to me.
shareSorry, but I TOTALLY disagree; I don't think she was convincing as a boy at all.
Part of the problem lies in the fact that no boy (unless he was playing a girl on stage) would be wearing pancake makeup, eye shadow, and lipstick.
Plus, Kate's movements and voice do not seem masculine at all.
If she was supposed to be a boy, she'd be around 16 or 17, the age when male voices have changed.
This was the "Yentl" of the 30s.
