no spoilers please, i haven't read the book yet. i just want to know; because based on the synopsis on this website it seems to have more to do with mildred (reminds me of great expectations) and on other sites it seems like the book has more to do with his whole life in general .

I'm usually a fan of classic movies, but this film pales in comparison with the book. The book is long, but once it gets going, is hard to put down.
The story deals with sexual obsession in a powerful way that probably doesn't lend itself to cinema - it's very internal. The book hits close to home for me (apologies for TMI), the film didn't.
