Great movie but

I wonder why they didn't make it more clear that she was in an hypnotic trance?

It thought it was fairly obvious but was meant to be subtle, to make the audience wonder what the control was.

It seemed very clear to me that he had some spell on her. I believe the family and her doctor even talked about it though they thought he was also drugging her. Once he's dead, she begins to recover even without knowing he's dead.

Before, they said she collapsed when he left. Maybe it had gotten overwhelming for her. She had started but did not fully recover when it was believed he was killed. The doctor had to treat her back to health. It turns out he was still around but immediately upon his return, he's in control of her again.

The only time the trance seemed to lift and almost be broken was when she was with Weston alone in his office. I thought it showed that fear was what was really the basis of Vance's control over Jessica; the fear in her own mind. The fear of what might happen to her and her family if she went against him. Vance even tried to instill fear on them and the servant.

They weren't in his trance but he threatened to take Jessica away when he was told he couldn't stay in the residence. He gave the maid the cage to tend to and then promised to murder her if she harmed his 'pets'. He says he cannot stand cruelty to animals but is willing to harm humans; perhaps it's because he knows he's an animal himself. He tried to get people to fear him. For whatever reason, probably due to her already weakened emotional state, it worked only on Jessica.
