Frankie Darro's personality and style of acting

after watching this movie I got the impression he could have become the "Michael J. Fox" of the 30's, but unfortunately for him and the viewers it just did not happen.

Mickey Rooney was also perennially young and short, and he was the biggest star in Hollywood in the late thirties/early forties. It's a shame because Darro at his best was every bit as talented and charismatic as Rooney was.

I agree that Darro seemed to have that "it" factor. I suppose the story could be remade but it wouldn't have the same feel any way you figure it- a story about the Depression filmed right during it. This has an almost documentary feel and is a moment memorably captured in time.

Short, but very big stars: James Cagney, Edw. G. Robinson, George Raft, Mickey Rooney, later H. Bogart.

More short-stature stars: Alan Ladd, Frank Sinatra, Tom Cruise, Dustin Hoffman...

Robert Taylor also comes to mind.

I'm here, Mr. Man, I cannot tell no lie and I'll be right here till the day I die

reply

Huh? If you're referring to the 1940s/1950s star, Robert Taylor is listed at 5'11 1/2 to 6'- not exactly a short-statured person.

reply

Plus he did his own tumbling stunt at the end. He certainly was compelling in this role.
