More likely she was bisexual. She also converted to Roman Catholicism, which would not have been a popular thing to do in such a Protestant nation.

The answer to question #1 is "None of the Above". She picked John Gilbert as her leading man. Olivier tested but she refused to work with him. Barrymore was her leading man in Grand Hotel, not Queen Christina.

Yes, this is correct. Garbo picked Gilbert as her leading man. She was icy towards Lawrence Olivier, for some reason, and would not work with him.

I heard somewhere that she thought his acting was wooden and he didn't like her, but I don't remember why. They didn't have a good relationship so she likely wouldn't have chosen him for any movie.

It's a bummer they didn't have her mother in the movie. She was absolutely crazy and Kristina's father didn't even want her to raise Kristina should he die. Their relationship was really strange and likely had a huge impact on Kristina. Maria Eleanora hated her daughter when she was a baby and rumor has it she tried to kill her a few times. After Gustav II Adolf died his wife kept his heart in a chest above her bed and made Kristina spend the nights with her in a completely dark room and she would cry all night. She also refused to let the king be buried and once she finally agreed to it she came to the church at night and tried to crawl in to his casket.

I wasn't there, of course, but according to trivia from various sources including TCM, Garbo initially did want Olivier for the role. She was impressed with his acting after seeing him in one of his movies. When he tested for the role they had no chemistry so she refused to work with him.

Once Olivier was out, she wanted Gilbert in. They had been in a few silent films together and had been or still were lovers. The chemistry was there but the studio didn't want him. He had been successful in silent movies but he didn't make the transition into talkies very well. Garbo had to fight for him to be cast. She won out so it seems she had a lot of clout at that point.
