shareBy far The Bride of Frankenstein with James Whale's German expressionistic influenced film style. It helped that he had artistic control. It is the film most often mentioned on top 100 lists or in critics lists of βGreat Films.β

The original Dracula and Frankenstein are great too.
I like all of them equally. Probably a tie between Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, and Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man. To me Invisible Man just isn't as good as the ones I just mentioned. And I didn't really care for The Mummy either.

the atmosphere of this is the grooviest of all the universal monster classics, and the only one taking place in winter setting if i'm not mistaken, the voice of the invisible man is wicked and it's so amazing the special effects they managed to get around doing in a movie of this age, now this is one of those real evil monsters like "dracula", not one you feel sorry for like "the wolf man", this guy went to great lengths to turn into this monster while the wolf man was just a victim of an accident incident, i'm always surprised how many pick "the creature from the black lagoon" as their favorite, you should really check out the radio adaptation π» of this released by "big finish" productions starring well known actors, or how about the comedic 1992 piece "memoirs of an invisible man" starring chevy chase, that is quite the rich movie containing a lot more than comedy. the lead in this actually star in two of the universal classic monsters dvd box, the other being "the phantom of the opera". i saw all those as a boob kid and found them so much more mystic and rich than later horror movies, i think the genre went from horrific to just disgusting, hard to watch and vulgar.

having afternoon tea,
at unusual hour you walked in,
and you two ladies crossed,
like a crumb i tried to hide under cloth,
but like licked between two blonde dames,
pulled left n right as they yell,
sat back watched the catfight,
tea stuck in throat as they pulled me down.
Frankly I think the absolute best are Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, and Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man. Honestly, I'd put Dracula, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and Ghost of Frankenstein above the Invisible Man too. I like Invisible Man, mind you. it's just that I feel like it's way more a comedy compared to the rest I mentioned. I laugh out loud through out most of the Invisible Man. The supporting characters all make me laugh my butt off. Especially Una O Connor. Then you have the Invisible Man himself acting so over the top it makes me laugh. Even at messed up scenes like killing his friend in the car crash and the train crash. I guess it's just the over the top way he acts. None of the other movies I mentioned have anyone as over the top.
shareAnother vote for "Bride of Frankenstein".
The rest are good movies, but IMHO "Bride" ought to be in the AFI top 100. It's that wonderful.
Frankenstein meets the wolfman was tops for me
