The first hat delivery guy

The chubby one, not the second guy who later did the voice for Winnie the Pooh. He looks and sounds familiar, but I can't figure out who the actor was from the cast list. Or is he Busby Berkeley himself?

reply

It's Sterling Holloway, and you were right about him being the voice on Winnie the Pooh.

Well, let's say, for the sake of argument, cocky-doody.

reply

Read the question again. Who is the FIRST delivery guy, NOT Sterling Holloway?

I'd say it's Jay Leno's intern, Ross (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1481801/), if I thought he was around in 1933 . . .

reply

I thought it was Grady Sutton, who later became a well-known young character in ALICE ADAMS, W.C. Fields films, etc. but whoever it was I'm shocked they are not mentioned in the further unbilled credits on IMDB - which lists a number of people who have wordless, very brief bits.

Thanks, Harlowholic! After looking up his picture, I agree with you.

Having seen that good ol' Southerner, Grady Sutton, in dozens of vintage films, I seriously question that the 1st hat delivery boy could possibly be Sutton. Doesn't look enough like him, probably not tall enough either, and doesn't even sound like his familiar "Sutton Southern drawl." I looked through the "Academy Players Directory," 1st ed. ('37), and noticed that young character actors Kewpie Martin and Norman Dobrin might conceivably play the 1st hat boy. I will try to find some old videos in which one or the other appears, and maybe will find a match. Or maybe not... -- Prof S. P. Hill, Cinema Studies, Univ. of Illinois.

reply

Definitely not Grady Sutton. He was not quite as chunky and also had that slight Southern drawl during his whole career. Just watch him in a few flicks and it'll be fairly obvious.

reply

The first hat delivery guy looked an awful lot like a young Dom DeLuise. Oddly enough, DeLuise was born in 1933, same year this movie was made.

I don't think it's Grady Sutton either. And there's a picture of Berkeley himself on his Wikipedia bio. He seems to have more hair and looks thinner in the face.

But whoever played the delivery guy was very funny.

reply

It definitely wasn't Berkeley because he's in a 'The making of' video on the DVD I got from Netflix.
He appeared to be well built and full head of hair.

I'm a Sterling Holloway fan and happened to see him as a customer in Lagune Beach back in the early 70s. I recognized him in this 1933 film on first sight. What I'm looking for now is someone to wonder who the baby was -- was it in fact Billy Barty who played a similar role in Honeymoon Hotel for Busby?

I miss Big Band music and talented singers. Leonard Cohen is my idol. Civility, harmony, unity!

reply

Yes, the "baby" was Billy Barty, who was nine years old at the time.

Looks rather like Maynard Holmes to me - he was Mr. Pratt, the personnel manager in Baby Face.
