George Brent playing a farmer?

Believable? I say not.

I actually feel this is the best performance I've ever seen by George Brent! He is almost always quite wooden and here he is cast as an inexpressive, colorless farmer which makes a perfect fit. He may be too good-looking for the typical movie farmer but there's no reason a real farmer can't be a handsome man. I've seen plenty of gorgeous low-income men in the South who if they had the inclination to use those looks could climb up ladders in class or career (model, actor, etc.)

Brent is usually a stiff, but he's not bad here is he? I'm not a big George Brent fan but I really do like him in this.
Brent is an Irishman, but listening to him one would hardly know it.

Doesn't the opening credits show a clip of him in a tuxedo from a different movie?

I'm a big George Brent fan, but I must confess I first felt kind of skeptical when I realized he was going to play the farmer. However, I ended up loving both him and his character. He was extremely handsome and sexy, and his bedroom scenes with Barbara Stanwyck are smoking hot, even though nothing really happens most of the time. I loved that look of desire in his eyes when they're finally all alone. That's exactly the kind of husband I've always dreamed of.

Let's not forget that he's no ordinary farmer. He graduated from "agricultural college" and is developing a world-class wheat crop.
