No farmer ...

After the initial ride back to the farm, they walk into a LIT home? Really? Who'd (pay to) leave the light on for that long time away? And in the first place, electric light out on the Canadian prairie in the 30s? HA! And everybody knows, a farmer is in bed EARLY, 'cuz he has to get up early. No 'late' evening rides, even to get a bride ... well, maybe for a HOT 23-yr old like Babs!

Perhaps he left the lights on to make the home appear more welcoming to her. He knows she's from Montreal and coming to a new area, new husband, new home. She would probably be scared enough, why not try to make it as inviting as possible?

When she arrives, it's not planting season and the days may be short. Even if he is usually early to bed, this is a special occasion. Besides, Jim had other things on his mind, not sleep. Things just didn't work out that way for him.
