The scene you're thinking of with the knitting needle in the neck is indeed from a film called THE OLD DARK HOUSE, but it was a different OLD DARK HOUSE, directed by William Castle. It's in a more humorous vein, pun intended.
shareYou're definitely thinking of the Hammer/William Castle remake from 1962 (not released until 1966). The English comedienne Joyce Grenfell got the knitting needles through the neck.
