Ive heard of plans for a new dvd of this film in America but does anyone know whether a version will come out that will be playable in the UK?

That shouldn't be a problem. Most DVD players can play both regions, but they have to be unlocked first by entering codes into the player menu. You'll have to search the internet for a hack for your brand and model to see if it's possible.
