Better than Cavalcade. Should have won Best Picture Oscar for 1933.
I just love this movie.
shareI think "Cavalcade" came out in 1933. "...Chain Gang" is from 1932.
shareIn the first few years of the Academy Awards, the "Oscar year" ran from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30 of the next year. This was changed in 1933, when they began to go from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, just like the calendar. Since movies from late 1932 like "Chain Gang" weren't eligible for the 1931-32 awards, they competed as 1933 films. So the "Oscar year" for 1933 actually lasted 15 months.
shareAgreed. I've tried watching Cavalcade a couple of times but I could never get through it. It's hackneyed, dated and cliched all the way through, and has very little true insight into human nature. But the Academy loves prestigious British films (very little has changed in that department!) and Cavalcade had a Noel Coward script and lots of cheerio! stiff upper lip! hip hip! and all that....
IAAFFACG is exactly the opposite. One of the great movies ever made. Paul Muni is magnificent.
