Were real bullets used?

I remember reading something years ago about how Warner Bros. would hire WWI veterans to shoot machine guns with live ammunition. The reason that live ammo was used was that was the only way they could show things like a building being shot at. This was done because they didn't have a different way to show that someone was being shot at. Does anyone know if this really was the case?

Yes. William Wellman hired an FBI sharpshooter with that used a .45 Thompson to riddle the building next to where Tom Nolan(James Cagney)is walking down what is know as New York Street on the Warner's backlot.

A strange muzzle can be seen put in Thompson submachine, before the cop shot against the wall poster.
