What do you think is the meaning behind this movie?

The strange, surreal short film of the late 1920s by the legendary Spanish filmmaker Luis Bunuel, what do you think it was trying to say, if at all, thanks.

reply

I think it depends on individual viewers. Surrealism is an indictment of the audience, not the artist(s).

reply

Thanks.

Also, why is it called "Andalusian Dog", is that in any way meant to be perhaps a counter reference to the ever popular "Pavlov's Dog"?

reply

Good theory. I don't know why it's called that.

Film making was new to the time. The director put a bunch of random shit together and called it "art." Then left it up to viewers to decipher a meaning when there probably was none or was too convoluted to even understand. If you like that style of movie making I suggest checking out David Lynch

reply

I have indeed, I am a huge Lynch fan.

reply

makes sense lol

reply

It means nothing. That's the point.

reply

And why do you think its called Andalusian Dog?

reply

And of course, this movie proved to be highly influential too. Made during the time before any or most of those filmmakers were even born. And it influenced and inspired the filmmakers such as and the films of such diverse directors as David Lynch, David Cronenberg, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Fernando Arrabal, Paul Verhoeven, Guy Maddin, Michael Haneke, Lars von Trier, Andrey Tarkovsky and tons of others.

reply

I'm not sure even Buñuel or Salvador Dalí (who co-wrote it) could tell you for certain... I recall reading somewhere that their writing process for it was to sit together and bounce whatever came into their heads off one another.

reply

I don't think it has any meaning. It is weird and random, like me, so I liked it.
